Steps for Applicants from Algeria
1. Verification of Professional Qualification
- Nursing qualifications obtained in Algeria are compared with the German training for “Registered Nurse (Pflegefachfrau / Pflegefachmann)”.
- The responsible body is the recognition authority of the respective federal state (usually the regional government or state health office).
⏱️ Duration: approx. 1–3 months for document review (depending on the federal state)
2. Submit the Recognition Application
The application must be submitted to the competent authority in Germany (depending on the intended place of work).
Required documents (each with a certified German translation):
Certificates of education / diplomas
Employment references (proof of practical experience)
Passport, CV
Language certificates (usually at least B2 German)
⏱️ Processing time: approx. 3–6 months
3. Provide Proof of Language Skills
For professional recognition as a nurse, German language level B2 (according to CEFR) is generally required.
In some cases, B1 is sufficient initially if a bridging or adaptation program is planned.
⏱️ Language training to B2: usually 6–12 months, depending on your starting level
4. Deficit Assessment by the Authority
The recognition authority evaluates whether the Algerian qualification is equivalent to the German one.
✅ Yes: Full recognition → direct professional license.
⚠️ No: Differences are identified → an adaptation course or knowledge test is required.
5. Adaptation Program / Knowledge Test
Adaptation program: Practical work in a hospital or care home with accompanying theoretical instruction to cover missing content.
Knowledge test: A written and practical exam to demonstrate that your knowledge matches the level of a German nurse.
⏱️ Duration:
Adaptation program: approx. 6–12 months
Knowledge test (including preparation): approx. 3–6 months
6. Professional Recognition & License
After successful completion, you receive official recognition as a registered nurse in Germany.
This allows for permanent employment in your profession.
7. Visa / Residence Permit
Applicants from Algeria must apply for either a visa for the recognition of foreign professional qualifications or a work visa including the recognition procedure.
Responsible authority: German Embassy in Algiers.

Overall Duration (realistic estimate):
Language training to B2: 6–12 months
Recognition procedure in Germany (including adaptation): 6–18 months
